A plea - were you at the show last night? Did you take pictures? Please could you email them to me (jodie@autons.info) as I took my camera but I discovered that the batteries in it were duff. I do have an extremely good excuse for not remembering to check the batteries - I mean I was rather distracted last night what with the microwave catching on fire about an hour before I had to be at the Arts Centre. I had rather been looking forward to having a baked spud as well. Luckily the fire wasn't that bad and I put the (still warm) microwave in the front garden and covered it with an old throw. The flat still stinks of the acrid smoke this morning.
I am so happy that the cocktails, sweets and punch went down a treat (I cannot believe we have finally got rid of those bottles of random liquor festering at the back of our larder). It was a bit of a surreal night - The Pyramids Of Mars turned up with all of his gear intending to play which was hilarious as no-one knew he would be performing! He went on just before Autons - a very interesting act - he is a one man band whom plays keyboard with one hand, xylophone with the other, chimes with his right knee and tambourine with his left foot, all while mumbling into a microphone about the planet Mars...fantastic!!!
Also I am very happy that we got to show the UNCUT version of the Renaldo and the Loaf film for 'Songs for Swinging Larvae' again - the last time I saw it was about ten years ago when Tony Auton was premiering the Twenty Missed Beats film he had helped conceive with Portsmouth bands, film makers and student film makers. Basically the plot is roughly thus - a little boy gets captured by a weird old man, aforementioned man strips the small boy, handcuffs him, and bathes him. He then puts small boy in a sailor suit and they play together. When the Twenty Missed Beats film was released on video they had (perhaps understandably) cut out these parts of the film... It is brilliant and unsettling and was directed by The Residents.
Oh yes, Autons played too. They were rather good.
I cannot think of much more really. It kind of feels weird now that the night is all over - so much preparation went into it so now it kind of feels like a bit of an anticlimax. And I am nursing a hangover. I am sure all of the Autons are nursing hangovers too.
